WHAT'S CAUSING YOUR FOOT/ANKLE PAIN?

SPRAINS

Common Problems & Symptoms:

Sprains can occur when one twists, rolls, or turns his/her ankle in an awkward or forceful manner. This can stretch or tear the ligaments which stabilize the ankle joint and push them past their normal range of motion. The severity of an ankle sprain depends on whether the ligament is partially or completely torn and on the number of ligaments involved.

The resulting symptoms are:

  • Ankle pain
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Swelling/bruising
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Decreased ability to walk

ANKLE FRACTURES

Common Problems & Symptoms:

An ankle fracture is a partial or complete break in one of the ankle bones. Fractures can range from the less-serious avulsion injuries to severe breaks of the tibia, fibula, or both. They are commonly caused by the ankle rolling inward or outward.

Signs and symptoms of an ankle fracture are:

  • Pain at the site of the fracture
  • Significant swelling and bruising
  • Blisters occurring over the fracture site
  • Deformity of the ankle, when compared to the other
  • Inability or difficulty walking

ANKLE OSTEOARTHRITIS

Common Problems & Symptoms:

Age, trauma, and general wear and tear can all lead to ankle osteoarthritis. Sometimes, it can be severe enough that it can limit one’s ability to move.

Osteoarthritis occurs when inflammation and injury cause deterioration of cartilage, resulting in:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • In severe cases, deformity.

GO WITH A HUDSON PRO

Non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy can be especially effective for less severe ankle issues, such as sprains.

Hudson Pro Orthopaedics works with a large network of exceptional physical therapists in the NY/NJ area to help our patients find top-quality care close to home. For more serious injuries, such as fractures or damaged cartilage, surgical intervention may be required.

One innovative treatment Hudson Pro Orthopaedics employs with ankle surgery is the use of stem cells. Stem cell therapy triggers our body’s natural healing process by using adult stem cells in one’s own body. Stem cells help other diseased or damaged cells to regenerate new tissue offering an alternative to invasive surgeries and a short recovery time.
